Dubai in August: Heat, Hotel Deals and Whether to Go (2027)

8 min read

Dubai in August runs at daytime highs of roughly 40 to 43°C, with nights that rarely drop below 30°C and a sea that feels like bathwater. August is a good month to go if you want cut-price five-star hotels, pool days and an evening-first rhythm. It's a poor one for a first visit built around desert drives, old-town walks and long afternoons on the beach.

That's the honest summary. The rest of this guide is how to make August work if you go anyway. Plenty of people from Amsterdam do, mostly for the hotel deals.

The August game plan

The way to plan Dubai in August is to start with the heat and work backwards. Put indoor plans in the middle of the day, outdoor plans at the edges, and pick a hotel that saves you from walking anywhere.

  1. Be honest about the trip you want. If you're picturing dune bashing, souk wandering and sunset strolls along Dubai Creek, wait for November to March. If you're picturing a resort pool, a spa, good restaurants and a bit of shopping, August is your month, and it's a cheap one.

  2. Check the calendar. Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) is the city's summer retail festival, run by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, with mall sales, raffles and family shows. DSS usually runs from late June or early July into late August, but the dates change every year, so confirm them on visitdubai.com before you book.

The Prophet's Birthday (Mawlid) is a UAE public holiday that follows the Hijri lunar calendar, so it moves about 11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it's expected around mid-August, with the official date announced by the UAE government shortly beforehand. Emirati Women's Day falls on 28 August every year, but it isn't a day off. Ramadan falls in February in 2027, so August has no fasting-hours rules to plan around.

On the Amsterdam side, the zomervakantie (the Dutch national summer school holiday, staggered across the north, central and south regions) covers part of August in every region. That makes Schiphol busy and holiday fares firm. The exact 2027 dates per region are on rijksoverheid.nl.

  3. Sort entry and flights. Dutch passport holders don't need to arrange a visa before flying. The details and limits are in our guide on how long Dutch citizens can stay in Dubai without a visa. Fares are in the numbers section below.

  4. Pick a hotel area that keeps you out of the sun. Downtown Dubai is the August pick: Dubai Mall, the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Metro are connected by air-conditioned walkways, so you can fill a whole day without going outside. Start with hotels in Downtown Dubai. Only switch to Dubai Marina or JBR if having a beach at your door matters more than shade.

  5. Plan each day around the sun. Outdoors means before about 9am or after sunset. Everything in between happens under a roof. These are the things August genuinely does best:

    • A sunrise swim. Kite Beach and JBR beach are at their best around 6am, before the sand gets too hot to cross barefoot. The water is around 33°C, so expect a warm bath rather than a cool dip.
    • The big indoor sights. Museum of the Future, Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates and the aquarium in Dubai Mall were made for August afternoons. Compare tickets and tours for Dubai's indoor attractions and book timed entry ahead.
    • Resort days. Five-star beach hotels and pool day passes run their best summer offers now, often with dining credit included.
    • DSS shopping. If you were going to buy something anyway, summer sales plus the UAE's 5% VAT make Dubai a decent place to do it.
    • Abu Dhabi for a day. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is fully air-conditioned and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is at its best at dusk. Car hire in Dubai turns it into an easy, flexible day trip along the E11.

Skip the classic afternoon desert safari. Most pick up around 3pm, which puts you in open dunes at the hottest point of the day. Save it for a winter trip.

  6. Pack for two climates. Bring loose linen or cotton, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and sandals for outside. Add a cardigan or light jumper, because malls, taxis and the Metro are properly cold. You'll also want something covering shoulders and knees for Jumeirah Mosque or the Grand Mosque. Pack a plug adapter too: the UAE uses the British three-pin Type G socket, not the Dutch Type F.

  7. Arrive connected. You'll want data the moment you land, so you can book a Careem or Uber from DXB instead of queueing in the heat. Set up a travel eSIM for the UAE before you leave Schiphol. Then pick up a Nol card (Dubai's rechargeable transport card) at any Metro station for trains and buses.

The real numbers

August is one of Dubai's two hottest months and its quietest for tourism, and the figures show why.

Weather

Typical August daytime highs in Dubai are around 40 to 43°C, with night-time lows around 29 to 31°C, based on long-term averages from the UAE National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). Rain in Dubai in August is rare: most years see none or close to none. Coastal humidity is often high, especially early in the morning, so it feels hotter than the thermometer says.

The Arabian Gulf off Dubai typically reaches 32 to 34°C in August. Dubai gets roughly 12.5 to 13 hours of daylight in August, with sunrise just before 6am and sunset around 7pm. Dubai is two hours ahead of Amsterdam in summer, so jet lag isn't an issue.

Flights from Amsterdam

Fares for August 2027 are not tracked yet. The dubaiamsterdam.com fare tracker currently publishes one-way calendar months from October 2026 to February 2027, last checked on 28 October 2026. We won't guess at August, but the tracked months give you a baseline.

The cheapest one-way fare from Amsterdam to Dubai ranges from EUR 147 (November 2026) to EUR 171 (October 2026) across the months tracked by dubaiamsterdam.com, checked 28 October 2026. Median one-way fares for those months sit between EUR 172 and EUR 262. The cheapest return from Amsterdam to Dubai was EUR 274 on AJet, Turkish Airlines' low-cost brand connecting through Istanbul, observed by dubaiamsterdam.com on 28 October 2026.

In the other direction, the cheapest one-way fare from Dubai to Amsterdam ranges from AED 449 (November 2026) to AED 752 (October 2026), according to fares tracked by dubaiamsterdam.com, checked 28 October 2026. The headline return from Dubai to Amsterdam was AED 1,096 on AJet on the same day.

August departures from Schiphol overlap with the Dutch school holidays, so don't count on those winter lows. Watch the fare calendar for the cheapest month and day to fly until August appears in the data.

Once August opens up, you can search fares for your August dates and compare them against the tracked baseline. Fly out early in the month if you can, before the late-August rush of residents returning to Dubai.

Hotels and costs on the ground

August is low season for Dubai hotels, and room rates are typically among the lowest of the year, especially at beach resorts. Watch for summer packages with free nights, upgrades or dining credit. Every hotel bill also carries the Tourism Dirham, a per-room, per-night fee set by Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism that varies by hotel category.

A mid-range dinner for two costs about AED 350 in Dubai (reviewed August 2026) and EUR 95 in Amsterdam (indexed to September 2026 with the CBS consumer price index), according to the dubaiamsterdam.com cost of living table. VAT is 5% in the UAE against 21% in the Netherlands, according to the UAE Ministry of Finance and the Belastingdienst (rules reviewed January 2026).

If you're driving, Special 95 petrol in Dubai cost AED 4.28 a litre in October 2026, as measured by dubaiamsterdam.com from ADNOC's monthly price board. UAE fuel prices reset every month, so the August figure will differ.

Moving rather than visiting? Budget for the summer power bill. Average monthly utilities in Dubai are AED 720, based on DEWA tariffs and reviewed by dubaiamsterdam.com in August 2026, and that average peaks in summer because of air conditioning.

Dubai and Amsterdam side by side

Swapping Amsterdam for Dubai in August means trading about 20 degrees of comfort for guaranteed sunshine.

The verdict

Go to Dubai in August if you want a cheap resort holiday, already know the city, or plan to mix pool time with shopping. You'll get five-star rooms at summer prices and short queues everywhere. Don't go if it's your first visit and you want the outdoor Dubai of desert camps, beach clubs at noon and walks through Al Fahidi. For that trip, book November to March instead.

The classic August mistakes

  • Planning around winter-only attractions. Global Village and Dubai Miracle Garden close for the summer and reopen in autumn. Many outdoor markets and beach clubs scale back too.
  • Sightseeing at noon. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the abra crossing on Dubai Creek and the Gold Souk in Deira are dawn or dusk jobs in August.
  • Freezing indoors. Going from 42°C pavements into air-conditioned malls all day is a fast route to a cold. Carry a layer.
  • Assuming a cheap hotel means a cheap flight. Dutch summer holidays keep demand out of Schiphol high. The last ten days or so of August also fill flights into Dubai as resident families return for the new school year.
  • Forgetting the holiday shift. If you need a government office, a bank branch or anything visa-related, check the confirmed Prophet's Birthday date first. For tourists it mostly means busier malls and restaurants.
  • Leaving things in a parked car. Phones, power banks, sunscreen and water bottles bake in a car parked in the sun. Use a windscreen shade and take electronics with you.
  • Treating weekend brunch like a borrel. Free-flowing drinks plus heat dehydrate you fast. Alternate with water, and don't plan an outdoor activity straight after.
