How long can Dutch citizens stay in Dubai without a visa
Visa-free entry costs a Dutch passport holder nothing and allows up to 90 days in Dubai within any 180-day period, while a UAE residence visa allows a longer stay but costs fees and takes weeks of paperwork arranged before or after arrival. For holidays, family visits and scouting trips before a move, visa-free entry wins: according to the UAE Embassy in The Hague (mofa.gov.ae), Dutch citizens need no advance application.
Visa-free entry means a UAE immigration officer admits the visitor on arrival without a visa applied for beforehand. The allowance covers the whole United Arab Emirates, not only Dubai, so days spent in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah count towards the same 90.
Entry on arrival, step by step
Entering Dubai visa-free as a Dutch citizen takes five practical steps, none of which involves an application form.
- Check the passport. The UAE Embassy in The Hague asks for a passport with at least six months of validity remaining (mofa.gov.ae/en/missions/the-hague/services/Visas). Renew a Dutch passport at the gemeente well before departure if it falls short.
- Book the flight. KLM and Emirates both fly Amsterdam Schiphol to Dubai International nonstop. KLM uses Terminal 1 and Emirates uses Terminal 3, which matters for anyone being collected at the airport.
- Pass immigration. Travellers either queue at a counter or use the smart gates. The UAE Embassy in The Hague states that the passport is stamped on arrival, but a stamp may not be given at smart gates, so check the entry record in the official ICP app (UAEICP) from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.
- Log the dates. Write down every entry and exit date. The 180-day period is a rolling window: on any given day, look back 180 days and count the days spent in the UAE. That count must not exceed 90.
- Leave or change status before day 90. A traveller who wants to stay longer has to move to another visa type through ICP (icp.gov.ae) or GDRFA Dubai, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (gdrfad.gov.ae), before the allowance runs out.
The numbers that matter
The visa-free stay itself costs AED 0; the figures that carry real money are the overstay fine, the flight and, for a long stay, rent.
- Allowance: 90 days in any 180-day period for Dutch passport holders, according to the UAE Embassy in The Hague.
- Passport validity: at least six months, according to the UAE Embassy in The Hague.
- Overstay fine: overstaying a UAE visit or visa costs AED 50 per day, according to the UAE government portal u.ae. A grace period may apply depending on visa type, so check the current terms on u.ae before relying on one.
- Golden Visa property threshold: property worth at least AED 2 million, according to u.ae. Sources disagree on the visa length for this route, so confirm the duration on u.ae.
Flights are cheapest in November: a one-way Amsterdam to Dubai fare started at EUR 128 for November 2026 departures (median EUR 147), according to fares tracked by dubaiamsterdam.com and checked on 10 October 2026. Across October 2026 to February 2027, the cheapest one-way fare per month ran from EUR 128 to 162. December has the highest median one-way fare of the tracked months, EUR 257, and Dutch school Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 (rijksoverheid.nl). The headline return fare on the site was EUR 271 on AJet, observed on 10 October 2026. The full month-by-month calendar is on the Amsterdam to Dubai fare calendar, and the raw figures sit in the tracked fare dataset.
For someone using most of the 90 days, living costs outweigh the flight. A one-bedroom flat in Dubai Marina costs AED 8,200 a month, a reference value reviewed on 14 August 2026 in the dubaiamsterdam.com cost of living table, based on the Dubai Statistics Center rental index. That figure describes a long let; a furnished short stay is priced separately. A monthly RTA transport pass on the Nol card costs AED 350 (reviewed 1 August 2026), and a single person's groceries come to AED 1,550 a month (reviewed 12 August 2026), both from the same table.
Visa-free entry against the longer routes
Visa-free entry is the only route with no fee and no paperwork, but it is also the only one that forbids working for a UAE employer.
| Route | Cost (AED) | Maximum stay | Apply before travel | Work allowed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visa-free entry, Dutch passport | 0 | 90 days in any 180-day period | No | No |
| Virtual Working Programme (GDRFA Dubai) | Fee set by GDRFA Dubai, check gdrfad.gov.ae | Check gdrfad.gov.ae | Yes | Remote work for an employer outside the UAE |
| Employment residence visa | Usually arranged and largely paid by the UAE employer | Tied to the work permit, check icp.gov.ae | Yes, through the employer | Yes, for the sponsoring employer |
| Golden Visa, property route | Property worth at least 2,000,000 | Check u.ae | Yes | Check u.ae |

The Virtual Working Programme is Dubai's remote work visa: a one-year residence permit for people employed by, or running, a company outside the UAE. Its fee and minimum income requirement are set by GDRFA Dubai and should be checked on gdrfad.gov.ae before applying.
The verdict
For any trip under 90 days, use visa-free entry and do nothing in advance beyond checking the passport. Anyone who plans to stay past 90 days, or to work, should start the residence process while still inside the allowance, because switching status from inside the UAE is far simpler than leaving and arguing a case at the border later. Buyers with AED 2 million to invest in property can look at the Golden Visa; everyone else takes the employment or remote work route.
Mistakes and edge cases
The most common error is treating 90 days as a per-trip allowance when it is a rolling total across 180 days.
- Counting per trip. Two 45-day stays inside six months use the entire allowance. A third trip in that window means entry can be refused or the fine starts to run.
- Assuming a border run resets the count. Days spent in Oman or anywhere outside the UAE do not count towards the 90, but leaving does not reset anything either. Only days dropping out of the 180-day window free up allowance. A traveller who uses all 90 days in one stretch should expect to stay out for roughly 90 days before a fresh full stay is possible.
- Forgetting the other emirates. A week in Abu Dhabi between two Dubai stays still counts, because the allowance is UAE-wide.
- Miscounting arrival and departure days. Count both the day of arrival and the day of departure as days in the country. That keeps the tally conservative.
- Relying on a passport stamp. A smart gate entry may leave no stamp. Use the ICP app record, not the passport pages, to confirm the entry date.
- Working on a visit entry. Taking paid work for a UAE company on visa-free entry is not allowed. Remote work for a Dutch employer over a long period belongs on the Virtual Working Programme.
- Expecting an automatic extension. Several sources report that EU nationals can obtain a visit visa after the 90 visa-free days are used, but the rules change. Check icp.gov.ae and gdrfad.gov.ae before booking a stay that depends on it.
- Dual nationals switching passports. Enter and leave the UAE on the same passport, so the entry and exit records match.
- Apostilles for residence paperwork. The UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention. Dutch documents such as birth certificates or diplomas need legalisation by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or through a notary chain), then the UAE Embassy in The Hague, then attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Assuming a long stay changes tax status. Ninety days in Dubai does not end Dutch tax residence on its own. A person who moves for good deregisters from the BRP (the Dutch population register), which most municipalities allow online with DigiD; timing rules differ, so check with your own gemeente. The Netherlands and the UAE signed a tax treaty in 2007 (treatydatabase.overheid.nl).
