Dubai in May 2027: Weather, Prices and Is It Worth It
You're in Amsterdam and wondering whether Dubai still makes sense in May. Dubai in May is hot, with daytime highs typically between 37 and 40°C and a sea around 28°C, but it's also the month when hotel rates slide down from the winter peak, so it works well if you spend the day by the water and go out after sunset.
The short version: May is great for beaches, pools, waterparks and long evenings. It's a poor month for wandering the old souks at noon. Plan around two things: Dutch long weekends that push up fares from Schiphol, and Eid al-Adha, which is expected to fall in mid May in 2027.
Check the May numbers first
May in Dubai means rising heat, shoulder-season prices and two holiday clusters that decide what you pay. Here's what each looks like.
Weather and daylight
Dubai's typical May weather is dry and hot: daytime highs usually sit in the high 30s °C, often touching 40°C by the end of the month, and nights rarely drop below the mid 20s. Rain is close to nonexistent. Humidity creeps up as the month goes on, so late May feels noticeably heavier than early May.
The Arabian Gulf off Dubai's beaches is usually around 28°C in May, warm enough that the water feels more like a bath than a swim. You get roughly 13 hours of daylight, with sunrise around 5:30 and sunset close to 7pm.
What's on in May
Dubai's big outdoor season is winding down by May. Global Village usually closes its season around late April or early May, and Dubai Miracle Garden shuts for the summer at some point in late spring, with exact dates changing every year, so check each venue's official site before you build a day around it.
Eid al-Adha is the main UAE public holiday in May 2027. Eid al-Adha is the Islamic "festival of sacrifice", and the UAE marks it with a public holiday that includes Arafat Day and the Eid days that follow. In 2027 it is expected around the middle of May, but the dates depend on the moon sighting and the UAE government confirms them only shortly before. Expect busy beaches and hotels as visitors arrive from across the Gulf.
On the Dutch side, three things push up fares from Amsterdam. The meivakantie (the Dutch May school holiday) runs from late April into early May; check the 2027 dates on the Rijksoverheid school holiday page. Ascension Day (Hemelvaartsdag) falls on Thursday 6 May 2027, and Whit Monday (Tweede Pinksterdag) on 17 May 2027, which creates two long weekends. If the Eid estimate holds, the Whitsun weekend could overlap with Eid in Dubai: busy at both ends.
Fares from Amsterdam
Fares for May 2027 are not tracked yet: the fare calendar on dubaiamsterdam.com, last checked on 28 October 2026, covers departures from Amsterdam up to February 2027 and from Dubai up to January 2027. The tracker publishes a month once enough departure days are priced, so May should appear in the Amsterdam to Dubai fare calendar in the coming months.
For a sense of the range, the cheapest one-way fares from Amsterdam (AMS) to Dubai (DXB) across the tracked months run from EUR 147 (November 2026) to EUR 171 (October 2026), according to fares tracked by dubaiamsterdam.com on 28 October 2026. The cheapest return from Amsterdam to Dubai shown on dubaiamsterdam.com was EUR 274 on AJet, observed on 28 October 2026. Those are not May prices, and May fares around the Dutch long weekends will likely sit above the cheapest tracked months. The raw numbers are in the tracked fare dataset if you want to check them.
Until May shows up in the calendar, you can still compare Amsterdam to Dubai flights for May and see what airlines are asking today.
Costs on the ground
A mid-range dinner for two in Dubai costs about AED 350, according to the dubaiamsterdam.com cost of living table (reviewed in August 2026). Petrol (Special 95) cost AED 4.28 per litre in October 2026, as measured from ADNOC Distribution, and UAE fuel prices are reset every month, so the May figure will differ. VAT in the UAE is 5%, and most hotel bills add Dubai's per-night Tourism Dirham fee on top. The full side by side list sits on the Dubai and Amsterdam cost of living page.
Plan your May trip in six steps
A May trip to Dubai comes together best if you sort dates first and the hotel second, because both swing with the holiday calendar.
- Pick dates around the holidays. Early May is milder than late May, but it overlaps the meivakantie and Ascension weekend. The week between Ascension and Whitsun is often the sweet spot, as long as Eid doesn't land on it.
- Watch fares from January. Once May 2027 appears in the tracker, compare the cheapest day with the median. If your preferred dates sit far above the cheapest day, shifting by two or three days usually pays.
- Choose a beach base. In May you want the sea and a pool within a few steps, so look at hotels around Jumeirah Beach Residence or Dubai Marina rather than a Downtown tower with a view and no beach.
- Check entry rules. Dutch passport holders can usually enter the UAE for a holiday without applying for a visa in advance; confirm the current rules and passport validity requirements with the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) before you fly.
- Pack for heat and aircon. Bring linen or other breathable clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, SPF 50 sunscreen, sunglasses and a refillable bottle. Add a light layer for malls, the Dubai Metro and cinemas, which are kept fridge cold. Pack a cover-up for walking off the beach and shoulder-and-knee clothing for mosque visits.
- Sort data before landing. You'll be booking taxis and checking maps the moment you leave DXB, so set up a travel eSIM for the UAE while you're still on Schiphol Wi-Fi.
Spend your days like this
These are the things that are genuinely best in May, plus one to skip.
Swim before 10am. Kite Beach and the JBR beach are at their best early, when the sand hasn't turned into a hotplate. The sea is properly warm, so you can stay in as long as you like.
Do the desert at sunset. The dunes cool down fast once the sun drops, and evening camps feel pleasant rather than punishing. Book a sunset desert safari that picks up after 3pm, not a morning one.
Spend a day at a waterpark. Aquaventure at Atlantis The Palm and Wild Wadi in Jumeirah make far more sense in May than in January, when the water can feel chilly.
Drive to Hatta at dawn. Hatta, the mountain enclave about 90 minutes from central Dubai, is lovely for kayaking on Hatta Dam if you're on the water by 7am. You'll need wheels, so hire a car for the Hatta day trip and plan to be back by lunch.
Go up the Burj Khalifa around sunset. The At the Top deck around 7pm gives you the golden light and then the city switching on, with the Dubai Fountain show below afterwards.
Skip: midday walking tours of Al Fahidi and the Deira souks. They are unpleasant in May heat. Take an abra across Dubai Creek after dark instead, when the souks are livelier anyway.
Dodge the usual May mistakes
Most May trips go wrong on heat, dates or closed venues, not on money.
- Booking over a Dutch long weekend without checking. Ascension (6 May 2027) and Whitsun (15 to 17 May 2027) fill flights from Amsterdam. Fly a day earlier or later if you can.
- Assuming winter attractions are open. Global Village and Dubai Miracle Garden run seasonally. Check their official sites for 2027 closing dates.
- Walking "just ten minutes". A ten-minute walk at 2pm in May is a bad idea. Taxis, the Metro and the RTA's bus network are cheap enough to make the walk pointless.
- Forgetting that Eid moves. If your trip overlaps Eid al-Adha, expect fuller hotels, busier beaches and some government offices closed. It's festive, not disruptive, but book restaurants ahead.
- Underpacking for the cold. Aircon at 18°C after 40°C outside is how people catch colds on holiday. Carry that light layer.
- Leaving the hire car in the sun. Steering wheels and seat belts get hot enough to burn. Use shaded or underground parking and a windscreen shade.
Compare May with Dubai's winter months
May trades winter's mild weather for warmer water and lower hotel prices, as the table shows. Climate figures are typical long-term values; fares are cheapest tracked one-way fares from dubaiamsterdam.com, checked on 28 October 2026.
| Month | Typical daytime high (°C) | Sea temperature (°C) | Season | Cheapest one-way AMS to DXB (EUR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December 2026 | about 25 | about 24 | Peak | 149 |
| January 2027 | about 24 | about 22 | Peak | 150 |
| February 2027 | about 25 | about 22 | Peak | 162 |
| May 2027 | 37 to 40 | about 28 | Shoulder, heading into low | Not tracked yet |
Winter wins for sightseeing on foot. May wins for anyone whose ideal day is sea, pool and a late dinner outdoors.
Decide if May works for you
Go in May if you want warm sea, emptier resorts and lower hotel rates than in winter, and you're happy to rest through the hottest hours. Aim for the first half of the month for slightly gentler heat, avoid Ascension and Whitsun weekends unless the fare is right, and check the Eid dates before you lock anything in. If your idea of Dubai is strolling souks and desert hikes in daylight, wait for November to March instead.
