Can I afford the move to Dubai?

On a gross salary of € 72.000 a year, a single person in Amsterdam keeps about € 1.080 a month after Dutch tax, rent and a modest living budget. The same pay in Dubai, where salaries carry no income tax, leaves about € 3.130. To live as well as you do in Amsterdam, you need roughly AED 16.300 a month in Dubai. Put in your own numbers below.

Dutch salaries: include the 8% holiday allowance and any 13th month.

How we work it out

Amsterdam: 2026 box 1 rates for employees below AOW age (35.75% to € 38.883, 37.56% to € 78.426, 49.5% above), minus the general tax credit and the labour tax credit. The rates already include the national insurance premiums. With the 30% ruling, up to 30% of salary (capped at € 262.000) is paid tax free.

Dubai: no personal income tax on salaries, so net equals gross. Costs on both sides come from our cost of living dataset, updated October 9, 2026, with each value labelled measured, CPI-indexed or reviewed. The basket adds 2 dinners for two a month, a gym, a transport pass per adult and Dutch basic health insurance.

Approximation, not tax advice

  • One earner, salary only. Partner income, box 2 and box 3, the mortgage interest deduction and pension contributions are left out.
  • Dutch benefits such as child benefit, the child budget and rent or care allowances are not counted, nor is Dubai's end-of-service gratuity.
  • Rent defaults are 1-bedroom city centre figures. Families should type their own.
  • Groceries scale with the household (a child counts as half an adult): our assumption, applied the same way in both cities.
  • The 2027 figure with the 27% ruling reuses the 2026 brackets, credits, wage cap and salary norm, because the 2027 ones are not final.
