Cost of living: Dubai vs Amsterdam
Amsterdam is slightly cheaper day to day in 2026, but Dubai comes out ahead for most single professionals once the 0% income tax is counted. The two biggest swing factors are the tax gap (0% in Dubai versus a 49.5% top rate in the Netherlands) and international school fees, which flip the verdict for families with school-age children.
In our August 2026 dataset, a one-bedroom in Dubai Marina rents above the Amsterdam Ring (€ 2.250 versus € 1.950), groceries and transport sit near parity, and petrol in Dubai costs about a third of the Dutch price. The full table is below, recomputed monthly.

De belasting geeft de doorslag
The UAE levies no personal income tax on salaries. The Netherlands taxes box 1 income progressively up to 49.5% in 2026, on top of mandatory health insurance of roughly € 150 per month. On a € 90.000 salary, that gap alone outweighs every other line in the table combined.
Incoming employees in the Netherlands can soften this with the 30% ruling, the expat facility that leaves part of gross salary untaxed for up to five years. It has been scaled back in recent budget rounds (27% from 2027), but it still changes the math meaningfully for new arrivals in Amsterdam.
Consumption taxes point the same way: 5% VAT in the UAE against 21% BTW in the Netherlands. Dubai claws some of it back through fees, including the € 1 Salik toll per gate crossing, the 5% housing fee billed on annual rent through DEWA, and international school fees that free Dutch public education simply does not have.
